The World at War
The World at War
The second chapter illuminates the trajectory of both groups through the Second World War. Using the framework of Franklin Roosevelt's Four Freedoms speech and the Atlantic Charter, the chapter explains how these public documents shaped the discourse on freedom during the war and shows the ways in which SNYC and the Council adapted these ideas as models to argue for citizenship rights and colonial independence. This chapter demonstrates the wide appeal that both groups enjoyed while antifascism was broadly embraced and the Soviet Union was a U.S. ally. The vital role that women played in both groups is also underscored in this section.
