The population boom in Florida in the late 19th and early 20th centuries resulted partly from the settlement of many Union veterans in the state, many in the three Union veteran colonies established around 1900. Despite this, Union veteran groups, in particular the Grand Army of the Republic and its auxiliary, the Woman’s Relief Corps, erected relatively few monuments in Florida prior to the Civil War Centennial. With one exception, these are located in cemeteries and not in more public places such as courthouse grounds or city parks.
