This chapter describes how the interest in and romance of “authenticity” fed an evolving fascination with the southern culture during the twentieth century. At the beginning of the century Americans looked to southern culture, especially music, foodways, and folk culture, to affirm purportedly primordial, innate, and enduring divisions among the nation’s people. Later in the century “authentic” southern culture was held up as evidence of the enrichment of American life that results from pervasive cultural exchange across economic, racial, and social divides.
