Origins and Evolution
Origins and Evolution
From “Beggar’s Helper” to a “White-Jacketed Army”
Chapter 1 traces the evolution of Cuban medical cooperation. A general overview of the development of medical cooperation in clearly delineated periods is provided. The four periods analyzed are the early years of the revolution, the decade of the 1970s that saw Cuba’s increased role in Africa in the 1970s, the 1990s when Cuba focused on Haiti and Central America after a series of major natural disasters, and the most recent period since Raúl Castro has been president.
