Chapter 4 describes the geographical characteristics and reviews the historical evolution of the Yaguajay zone, where the El Chorro de Maíta archaeological site is located. Specifically, the archaeological importance of this area, associated with the Banes Archaeological Area, is presented; the large number of archaeological sites in this area appear to be influenced by environmental features and natural resources. A summary of information is presented from all of the archaeological research conducted at El Chorro de Maíta, particularly the excavations and studies directed by José M. Guarch Delmonte and the Departamento de Arqueología de Holguín starting in 1986. They discovered domestic areas and a large cemetery with 108 burials. The initial view of the site concluded that it was primarily an indigenous community expressing regional leadership and indicators of social differentation marked by the presence of exceptional objects in the burials and where the connection to Europeans seemed to be of little importance.
