The foci of this chapter will be (1) the emergence of cloth as a form of currency (vaðmál) at the end of the Viking Age in Iceland, (2) an examination of evidence for the existence of similar cloth currencies in the Viking Age of continental Scandinavia, and (3) a consideration of the implications of this economic focus on women and their roles.
